Areca Palm Houseplant (Dypsis Lutescens)

Bring a touch of the tropics into your home with this beautiful Areca Palm, also widely known as the Butterfly Palm or Golden Cane Palm. One of the most popular and recognisable indoor palms, the Areca Palm is loved for its graceful, arching feathery fronds that fan out from multiple slender, cane-like stems. The result is a lush, full display of rich green foliage that adds instant warmth and a tropical feel to any interior space.

Native to the humid forests of Madagascar, this elegant palm thrives in bright, indirect light and is perfectly suited to living rooms, bedrooms, conservatories, hallways, and offices. The Areca Palm is also widely recognised for its air-purifying properties, helping to naturally freshen and humidify the atmosphere in your home.

What's Included:

  • 1 x Areca Palm (Dypsis Lutescens) supplied in a 19cm pot

Key Features:

  • Graceful, arching feathery fronds with a lush tropical appearance

  • Recognised air-purifying houseplant that can help improve indoor air quality

  • Low maintenance and suitable for those newer to houseplant care

  • Clump-forming habit that creates a naturally full, bushy display

  • Ideal for brightening up indoor spaces with vibrant greenery

Plant Care:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch and yellow the frond tips.

  • Watering: Water when the top few centimetres of compost feel dry to the touch. Ensure good drainage and avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering during winter months.

  • Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity. Mist the fronds regularly, especially during the heating season, or place on a pebble tray filled with water to boost moisture levels.

  • Temperature: Prefers consistent warmth between 16–24°C. Avoid cold draughts, open windows in winter, and proximity to radiators.

  • Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring through summer). No feeding required in autumn and winter.

  • Repotting: Repot every two to three years in spring using a well-draining, peat-free houseplant compost. The Areca Palm prefers to be slightly snug in its pot.

  • Pruning: Remove any brown or yellowing fronds at the base to keep the plant looking tidy and to encourage healthy new growth.

Cultural Information:

  • Botanical Name: Dypsis lutescens (syn. Chrysalidocarpus lutescens)

  • Common Names: Areca Palm, Butterfly Palm, Golden Cane Palm, Yellow Palm

  • Classification: Tender Evergreen Palm
