Asiatic lilies give the boldest colour of any summer bulb, on strong upright stems that need no staking.

Each 1 litre pot holds three lilies, grown in Yorkshire, so a single pot gives a full head of orange trumpet flowers rather than one lonely stem. They reach roughly 60 to 90cm tall and about 30cm across, and the flowers cut well for the house. Grow them in a sunny or lightly shaded border, or stand the pots on a patio where the colour does the work.

Supplied as established plants in 13cm, 1 litre pots, ready to plant straight out or to drop into a larger container. Give them ground or compost that drains freely, water while they are growing and feed in spring. The bulbs stay in place over winter and come up again the following year. Lilies are toxic to cats. Every part of the plant, including the pollen and the water in a vase, can cause fatal kidney failure, so they should not be grown or cut for a household with a cat.
