'Hinnonmaki Red' is a Finnish bred gooseberry that carries heavy crops of dark red, sweet berries.

The fruit is good enough to eat straight off the bush once it has coloured up properly, and it still cooks and jams well if picked a little earlier. The variety has useful resistance to American gooseberry mildew, which is the problem that spoils most gooseberry crops, so it stays clean in an average British summer.

One bush crops on its own, as gooseberries are self fertile. Plant in full sun or partial shade; gooseberries are one of the few fruits that will still crop properly in a cooler, part shaded spot, which makes them useful where nothing else fruits. Prune in winter to an open goblet shape so air moves through the middle of the bush. The stems carry sharp thorns, so gloves are worth having at picking time.

Supplied as an established bush in a 2 litre pot, ready to plant.
