Tomato 'Tumbling Tom Red' is a trailing cherry tomato for hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers.

The stems tumble over the edge of a basket and carry an abundance of small, sweet, bright red cherry tomatoes through summer and into early autumn. The plant stays at 20 to 30cm with a trailing spread of 30 to 60cm, which makes it as ornamental as it is productive.

It is a determinate bush type, so there is no staking and no pinching out of side shoots to do. Grow it in full sun in a warm sheltered spot and keep it evenly watered and fed with high potash once the fruit starts to set, because a basket in full sun dries out quickly. Plant it out only once all risk of frost has passed, because tomatoes are killed outright by the first frost and set back badly by cold nights. Water evenly rather than in bursts, since erratic watering is what causes blossom end rot and split fruit, and feed with a high-potash tomato feed once the first truss has set. Supplied as one established plant in a 2 litre root ball. Tomato foliage is in the same family as potato and is a known risk to pets, so keep animals away from the plants.
